- "We would not recommend that people allow themselves to be used by a tyrant and a dictator who has a history of doing horrible things to even his own people as well as his neighbors. - Part II of my "surrogates for Energy 92.7/5" listing...most of which come from the Chicago message board at radio-info.com...Z-103.5 Toronto, Party 93.1 Miami, EnergyDanceRadio.com, Live365 Channel 241860, ClubFMRadio.com, and the home of their voice-over pro, Jay Beau Jones. (1.8.2003)
- Some enterprising individual in Europe has launched Mecca Cola, deemed to be an alternative to the "imperialistic" leanings of Coca-Cola and other American soft drinks. The thing about this that's just not kosher (if I may be cheeky for a moment) is that commercial behaviors are exactly what terrorists target more than anything else. While there's plenty of double-talk about the current rash of terrorism being a "jihad" or "holy war," in reality, it's not targeted so much at our religion as at our economy and our way of life. Notice how Israeli casualties happen while people are going about their daily business, as in Sunday's attacks on people in a commercial district near a bus station. The terrorists are using religion as the veil for their sociopathic killing. It's ironic, in part, because Mohammed was a merchant, and Muslims were early practicioners of international trade. And to think, a little bit of capitalism can make for so much happiness. Suicide bombing is not how rational people think. (1.7.2003)
- Spanish Broadcasting System has killed one of the great live radio stations -- WKIE/Energy 92.7/5 Chicago, which until Sunday night was pumping out dance music and outstanding personality radio from people like Jeffrey T. Mason and Jimmy Knight. Better still, it was even streamed online 24/7. Now, as it changes to a Spanish Top-40 format, online listeners are short one more good station. While a few of the DJ's already have gigs running at other stations (like Jimmie Page), it's going to be a scramble to find a suitable online listening replacement. So far, the prospects include EnergyInternetRadio.com and DanceRadio.net, but they almost certainly can't do what Energy did -- deliver a live, personality-driven product day in and day out that splattered the Chicago feeling all over the 'Net. 94.7 The Zone is one of the few conglomerate-owned stations in Chicago that actually has a pulse, but they're still not streaming online. It's just not going to be the same without WKIE. O Big City Radio, why have you abandoned us? (1.7.2003)
- Tax forms in a hurry: Form 1040 and instructions, along with the tax tables. (1.4.2003)
- Sad news about the passing of a man about whom I just learned: WWII Ace Joe Foss, who also spent time as governor of South Dakota. Foss was apparently extraordinarily honorable and modest about his wartime heroics. Apparently he was in the news about this time last year, when he was hassled in the Phoenix airport because the guards mistook his Medal of Honor for a weapon. Quite frankly, I wouldn't mind being on flights where guys like Foss were armed. They did a pretty good job of eliminating airborne threats during World War II. Come to think of it, maybe it should be mandatory that people like Foss be armed. (1.3.2003)
