Time-Lapse Speechmaking
President Bush was still speaking at 9:52 pm CT (10:52 pm ET). CNN's report on the speech was posted at 10:33 pm ET. Sure, the GOP issued an early release of the speech text, but as of 10:56 pm ET, he still had 15 paragraphs to go. CNN should reconsider whether they should report it as if the event had already concluded: "Bush did engage in a few moments of levity before ending his address and poked fun at himself."

Florida Orders 2.5 Million Residents to Evacuate
It's the biggest hurricane evacuation in state history. Palm Beach, Miami-Dade counties included. Only 331 beds listed as available in state shelters. Orders from Governor Bush include suspension of tolls on state roads and the OK to reverse lane directions. Bad news: The local NWS radar has been out since last weekend, and another system has been busted since Charley. Local coverage: WFOR, WPLG, WTVJ, WSVN, Miami Herald.

Asylum-Seekers Head for France, US, UK
UN High Commission for Refugees says fewer people sought asylum in industrialized nations in 17 years. Largest groups seeking asylum: Russians (mainly from Chechnya), Serbia and Montenegro, China, Turkish Kurds. Big drop in numbers from Iraq, Afghanistan.

Hurricane Frances Might Wipe Out Space Shuttle Program
She's a Category 4 storm, and the predicted path puts her almost dead-center on the Kennedy Space Center. NASA usually leaves 140 people on staff during a storm, but they could hold it down to just a dozen this time. (from Slashdot)

Put Your Disney World Vacation on Hold
Hurricane Frances is not only huge, she's packing winds of 177 miles an hour at last report. The National Hurricane Center says the latest data "has produced some interesting and disturbing results." The storm is forecast to hit Florida around midday Friday.
