World Population Soaring; UN Worried
Bureaucrats are blaming $34 million in family-planning funds withheld by the United States under President Bush. Probably more significant is the link between poverty and high birth rates. A large family is a good safety net for old people, and a source of cheap labor (on the farm, for example) in the meantime. Meantime, there's reason for hope when one considers that economic growth leads to better diets.
