Why We Built the Interstate Highway System
In large part because Eisenhower's experiences as a young Army officer made him realize we couldn't move anything efficiently cross-country on the existing highways...but it's important to realize that when the gas tax stops working (possibly in the next ten years), we'll need to find alternatives that don't destroy American privacy.
