Economic-development incentives corrupt the free market
Goodyear has raked the state of Ohio over the coals for a $20 million no-interest loan and a big tax discount...just to stay in Akron. The state says the whole package is worth more than $90 million. Just to stay! And it's all because Virginia and North Carolina offered incentive packages of their own to try to lure Goodyear away. The line between "incentives" and "extortion" becomes ever harder to distinguish. There's a huge gap between building roads and sewers to maintain an inviting infrastructure and simply doling out huge grants and tax breaks just to keep what you already have.
