Is corn really the sole cause of rising food prices?
Short, straight answer: No. Based on the amount of corn used in the food supply, the use of corn for ethanol fuel has driven up world food prices by about 1.3% overall. Rising demand for food and weather problems have been much to blame for the remaining jump in prices. That doesn't mean we shouldn't consider the effects of using plants for mechanical (rather than human) energy, but we shouldn't go overboard to blame them for price rises they can't possibly have caused.
The trees of Stanford University
Mental exercise: Get into a time machine, and tell someone in 1908 that just a couple of generations away, people in Shanghai and Sydney will be able to take an arboreal tour of Stanford University, documented in great detail, without leaving home. Such is the power of unanticipated technology.
