Hurricane Katrina has set off the largest mass migration in America in 150 years. What's especially fascinating about the Hurricane Katrina diaspora is that so few evacuees are moving farther north than St. Louis or Memphis. In fact, almost none are.
Lots of questions linger: How long will it take to restore municipal water service? Where will they put the mountains of debris? Why were some evacuees not told where they were going until they were on their planes? What's going to happen when St. Louis has an earthquake or when the inevitable Big One shakes Los Angeles?
