Please note: These show notes may be in various stages of completion -- ranging from brainstormed notes through to well-polished monologues. Please excuse anything that may seem rough around the edges, as it may only be a first draft of a thought and not be fully representative of what was said on the air.

BUT FIRST: The opening essay
- Was working on a jobsite the other day
- Had to explain how a mildly complicated mechanism worked
- Came down to show, not tell
- There's a manual description and even a video, but actually doing the work -- feeling and doing it -- was the best education I could offer
- That's good because I couldn't grasp the right words to describe a particular step in the process
- Words are the main tool we use to communicate, but it's funny how much takes place without using words
- You don't think the words for "hunger" or "pain" or "exhaustion". There's probably a German word for just about everything, but certain things just well up inside of you, like the moment your first child is born, or when you experience a scent you haven't smelled for decades
- Translating those thoughts, feelings, and sensations into words makes them things we can share
- Two of the biggest stories this week illustrate just how hard this is
- Kavanaugh accuser echoes the much larger "Me Too" -- hard to explain why people stay silent, but it also reveals how (even if the story is completely true) lots of things are implied or hinted or otherwise left unsaid
- Meanwhile, here in Iowa, a young woman was killed on a golf course, and it's triggered countless responses about what it feels like to be a woman who's in a vulnerable position -- like jogging with headphones on
- We need people willing to tell each other how we feel using words as best we can
- We all need to give each other space to use those words and to realize we don't always have the right ones, and sometimes we'll say things the wrong way
- So much need for empathy
- You're not always going to understand from reading. Sometimes you have to try to feel it.
