In the news
- NFL training camps are underway.
- The biggest conferences made it pretty clear that they're planning to leave what we know as Division I NCAA football and start something exclusive for themselves. Bob Bowlsby (once of UNI and Iowa, now of the Big 12) took up the mantle on the subject. They're not actually threatening to leave the NCAA, it wouldn't break my heart if they did. I agree with economist Robert Barro, who more than a decade ago called the NCAA the "best monopoly in America".
- Strange things happened at the Iowa High School State Baseball Tournament when Le Mars won using an ineligible pitcher, giving Sioux City Heelan the win by a forfeit.
- The Brickyard 400 is on Sunday. Er, rather, the "20th Running of the Crown Royal Presents the Samuel Deeds 400 at the Brickyard Powered by BigMachineRecords.com" takes place that day.
- Ryan Braun has been suspended from baseball for the rest of the season. So while the collection process for the sample showing synthetic testosterone was imperfect (and process always matters), plenty of people have opposing views on whether the collector is owed an apology.
